There is a good thread here on grinding HSS lathe bits. They are pretty cheap so I'd get a 5 pack of the 1/4" blanks at a minimum to practice with and make a few different tools, 10 would be even better. Here is the thread on grinding tools. It is a long thread but very worthwhile.

Now mount the ball between these cup centers. The pressure from the tailstock quill will hold the ball between then. Put the ball in there so the tenons you cut off face you and will be spinning perpendicular to the bed. When you turn the lathe on you will see a shadow created by the out of round portion. Turn this off.

Alan, I don't wet sand but noticed a couple of things in your thread to comment on. I sometimes soak pieces in a water/detergent solution to make final sanding easier but - I do that right after turning green, soak for 24 hours, rinse then put up to dry just as I would any other piece. I don't sand them right after soaking.

I put oil in ball oilers two ways. 1) Get a small squeeze bottle with a blunt Luer needle tip. Use the tip of the needle to depress the ball. 2) Take a can oiler with a metal tip small/pointy enough to depress the ball. Use a fine jeweler's saw to cut a slit in the oiler tip, right across the hole on the end.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have an opportunity to buy a Clausing 5914 lathe for $1000. The lathe itself is in excellent condition, very little wear. It comes with taper attachment, Aloris qctp with several tool holders, steady rest, 3 jaw 8" chuck and 5c collet closer. The issue is the variable speed.

The open meshed abrasives work better on wet wood (like Abranet). Also, wet wood will frequently spray droplets of water at you while it turns. Waxing the lathe bedways will keep those droplets from causing rust. I sometimes wish for windshield wipers on my face shield when turning wet wood. I particularly like to turn live-edged pieces while wet.

Proper ball screws have two nuts with a spring between them to take up almost all slop. My 1977 model Boston Digital CNC mill has about .0005-6" backlash due to large screws with spring loaded nuts. A friend spent a ridiculous effort and money to convert a good BP to ball screws and add CNC. He has .002" backlash.

The old man showed me how to cut a pipe thread on a manual lathe years ago. Figure out how much your thread tapers per individual thread. So you cut the thread to the largest diameter. You then continue to cut, each time taking a cut equal to the taper of one thread, then drop the cutter out one thread short of the last pass.

Now depending on your lathe and the shape of the quill screw bearing plate you may need to use a 4 jaw chuck like I did on this one (PraziSD400), or just a 3 jaw like I did on the last one I did (Prazi SD300).
